Renting a tux for beginners
January 5th, 2012 | BestMensTies.Com
After learning about all possible dress codes in our previous blog post, you realized that you will, sooner or later need a black tuxedo, either for a prom, fundraiser, opera, wedding, or any other special day. Depending on how often you will have an opportunity to wear it, you can decide whether to buy it or to rent it.
Most guys actually rent a tux. Only if you attend more than 4-6 black or white tie events per year, it is wise to buy a tux (unless you are rich of course, and the investment in your own tux is not an issue).
Know the type of event you will be attending to and the exact dress code for it, as well as what others will be wearing, including your date/partner. That way you will know what kind of a tux you will need to look for.
Plan well and act on time, especially during holiday times and spring wedding season. Reserve a tux as early as possible, up to 3 months in advance.
Renting a tux will cost you from $50 to $300, and more if you want to keep it for longer time.
Know what components of a tuxedo you will be renting. By definition, tuxedo is a complete outfit that includes a jacket, trousers (usually with a silk stripe down the side), a bow tie, and often the cummerbund.

A regular tuxedo jacket features satin lapels and a boutonniere hole. Keep in mind that tuxedo jackets are not created all equal and that there are more classic ones and more trendy ones. Ask around about what will fit the best for event you are attending.
Cummerbund is a pleated sash worn around the waist, with its pleats always be facing up and matching a bow tie color.
The last alternative to a black tux is a classic black suit. If worn with a straight collar white shirt and solid black tie (necktie or a bow tie), it can be an acceptable, although not too preferable, alternative to a tuxedo, especially if you want to show yourself in your best light.
P.S. And don't forget to return the rented tux on time!

How to rent a tux?
- Browse various tuxedo galleries online and print out the styles that are appropriate for your event.
- Visit the formal wear stores in your area. They usually both sell and rent tuxedos. Bring along the pictures and see what they have to offer. They are the experts and might have some suggestions for you. Be open to listen to their advice.
- Compare the prices and their return policy details.
- After you have narrowed down your selection, take note of your measurements and make sure that the store has your size. Place a deposit and confirm the reservation.
- Make appointment for any adjustment to the tux if needed. Pick it up at least two days before the event in order to try it on and make sure they have been altered according to measures.
- And finally, enjoy your event being perfectly dressed in a tuxedo that fits you like a glove!
P.S. And don't forget to return the rented tux on time!
